What are brake pads?

Brake pads are a key component of any vehicle’s braking system. They're designed to slow down your vehicle by squeezing against a car's brake discs, slowing it down through friction and pressure.

As such, brake pads are integral to the safety of your vehicle. Failing brake pads will drastically reduce the stopping speed of your vehicle, and this can cause serious accidents.

This means it's essential to keep on top of their performance, by conducting regular car brake checks and having replacement brake pads fitted as soon as they're needed.

Symptoms of malfunctioning brakes pads

There are a few different signs that may become evident when your brake pads are coming to the ends of their lives. If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may well need new brake pads.

Loud noises

If you notice a loud screeching or grinding noise when you apply the brakes, it may mean that the brake caliper is scratching directly against the disc. This means you effectively have no brake pad left!

Burning smell

The caliper scratching against the disc may cause intensive heat from friction, and you'll likely be able to smell the burning if that's the case. You'll definitely need a new set of brake pads at that point.

Vibration under braking

Any vibrations in your vehicle are a clear indicator that new pads are required. If you come across this, it's best to book a brake inspection.

Reduced stopping speed

When you put your foot on the brake, you should come to a stop quickly. If you notice your slowing speed increasing, your brake pads may be on their last legs.

Vehicle pulling to one side

If your vehicle pulls in either direction then this might be an indicator that the brake pad or pads have worn out more on one side of your car than the other.

Brake warning light

Some vehicles are fitted with a brake warning light that will show up on your dashboard if there's a fault with the brakes. And that fault may well be that your brake pads have become too worn.

How do brake pads work?

To slow your car down or bring it to a stop, your brake pads are used to clamp down on either side of the brake discs attached to your rear wheels, to create friction and reduce speed.

Some cars are also fitted with 'ABS' (anti-lock braking systems), which prevent the wheels from locking up during braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control and avoid skidding.

How long do brake pads last?

A set of brake pads should typically last 30,000-35,000 miles on average. The condition of your brake pads will depend on a few factors though, such as the size of your car and the style of your driving.

For example, larger cars are, of course, heavier and therefore require more stopping power. This means that they'll go through brake pads more quickly.

If you brake gently, your brake pads won't undergo so much strain, which means they're likely to last for longer. Those who are heavy on the brakes are going to go through pads much more quickly than every 30,000 miles.
